What is the best form of self-defense for someone out of shape?
This, or a similar variation, is a common question to those of us who teach self-defense. And the reality is, size, strength and fitness matter! Yes, there are things you can do to protect or defend yourself against bigger, stronger, and more fit attackers. But here is a simple truth, the more fit you are and the better shape you are in, the less likely you will be chosen as a potential victim, and the easier it will be to defend yourself.
One of the best things you can do for your personal safety and ability to defend yourself if a situation calls for it, is to get into the best physical shape you can. This doesn't mean you have to train like an Olympic or professional athlete. You don't even have to be the best in your local gym. What it means is you should be in the best shape YOU can be in. This will be different for everyone. Just realize, the more fit you are, the easier it will be able to do many things, and that includes defending yourself if needed.
Fortunately, getting in shape is within reach for most people. It just takes desire, determination, and dedication to do it. It is not really that hard. Eat healthy and exercise. There are many resources to help with this, so you just need to find the ones that fit your lifestyle and goals and get to following the program. The problem is staying with it. Like warriorship, the key is just staying on the path. But believe me, once you've gone down the path a ways, you'll want to stay on it. It is definitely worth it!
I heard on the Today show this morning that losing weight was the number one New Year Resolution. Good, I hope people just follow through with it. I think each of us should set a goal for this year, next year, and the rest of our lives to stay in the best shape we can. Besides making life lot more enjoyable, you will stay safer and be able to defend yourself if you ever have to. And for those reasons, and others, it makes getting and staying in shape one of the worthiest goals you can achieve. So do it!
