Be prepared! This quote makes a lot of sense, just don’t take it to go overboard with paranoia:
“Anyone who is aware of his environment knows that the peril of physical assault does exist, and that it exists everywhere and at all times.”
– Jeff Cooper
I don’t post a quote like this to be a fear monger. Everyone who knows me, knows that I am not paranoid and living in a bunker up here in Montana. Rather, I prefer to be aware and enjoy life to the fullest. I am prepared if something happens, and take sensible precautions to keep my family and myself safe.
We can list thousands of tragedies that occur to people who woke up and never dreamed that they would lose their life or be thrust into the middle of a horrific event on that day. The truth is that we just don’t know when something may happen.
Again, this does not mean we should live in fear. I don’t believe you have load up with thirty pounds of weapons and gear to go out and check the mail. Nor do you need to load up like that to go to the mall or movie, even though as we have seen, people have been attacked and killed going to the mall and movies. But you do want to be prepared and be aware. That’s just common sense.
Be Prepared!
Each individual must decide what level of preparedness is comfortable for them. I personally don’t go to the extremes that some do. But I do stay very aware when I am out and about. This really is the most important thing you can do for your personal safety. And taking other simple precautions, such as I teach at Survive and Defend, can go a long way in keeping you safe. Knowing how to defend yourself, and what to do in an emergency, are also just prudent skills to have in today’s world.
This does not mean you have to train for hours a day, become a combatives expert, or a martial art master. But learning some simple skills to defend yourself can mean the difference. Even if learning these skills just turns you into a harder target that criminals pass by.
Bottom line, we never really know what will happen when. So, Be Prepared! Cooper is right that the peril exists, and it just seems like common sense to learn some basic skills to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and what to do if ever attacked or thrust into a violent situation.
I make information to do just that easily accessible and affordable at this site. (Check out becoming a member!) I don’t want a society of paranoia, nor do I want a society of hyper vigilant tactical Rambo wannabes. I want to help good people stay safe and live life to the fullest, and to be prepared just in case.
Stay Safe,
Alain
