Kelly McGillis Attacked 2Kelly McGillis attacked in a home invasion. Yes, that Kelly McGillis who starred in movies such as Top Gun and Witness in the 1980 and smaller roles more recently. The actress, who is nearing her 59th birthday (born July 9, 1957), returned to her Hendersonville, N.C., home Friday, June 17th, to find a light on and the door unlocked. Once inside, Kelly McGillis was attacked by a strange woman. McGillis was scratched and bruised but is otherwise okay.

The Henderson County sheriff’s office arrested and charged a 38-year-old-woman, Laurence Marie Dorn, with second-degree burglary, misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor stalking, assault and battery and interfering with emergency communication.

Lessons We Can Learn From Kelly McGillis Attacked In Her Home

  1. Kelly McGillis had an alarm for her home but grew complacent and didn’t set it after living there for four years and having nothing happen. Locks and alarms do you absolutely no good if you don’t use them. Many times security is breached because people fail to use the security measures available. Lock your doors, set your alarms, and use the security measures you have in place. They won’t serve their function and keep you safe if you don’t use them. Assess your security measures to ensure you have what you need.
  2. Don’t ignore warning signs as McGillis did when she arrived at her home. She saw a light on that she didn’t think she had left that way. The door was open and she saw strange shoes by the door. (Girls pink sandals and a larger black pair.) McGillis did what many people do, she rationalized away these warning signs. She thought that maybe she’d left the light on, and that maybe the sandals belonged to her daughter. If you ever arrive home, or go anywhere for that matter, and warning signs appear and you think something isn’t right, take precautions and don’t go in. If it appears your home has been broken into, go somewhere else and call the police. Let them clear the building before you go inside. You don’t want to go in and be attacked like happened in this situation. McGillis was fortunate that it wasn’t worse. Far too many people have been seriously injured or killed in similar situations.
  3. In a television interview where McGillis discussed the attack, she said, “I’m like, what have I done to deserve this? What have I done?” You don’t “have” to do anything to be selected by a criminal. While it is true that sometimes our actions and the places we frequent can contribute to greater likelihood of being attacked, robbed, or caught up in something we don’t want to be part of, the truth is sometimes bad things happen to good people for no real reason.
  4. After Kelly McGillis was attacked, she announced that she plans to apply for a concealed carry gun permit. Good for her. Apparently McGillis is familiar with firearms and owns firearms already. She now wants to carry one for her self-protection. The only point I want to make about this is that I hope she goes through proper training on safety and use of the firearm she decides to carry. This should not only include the tactical use of a firearm for defense, but the legal aspects of defending yourself with a firearm. All responsible gun owners should have training in safety, shooting, and the legalities of firearm ownership and self-defense use.

Kelly McGillis attacked in a home invasion made headlines. Sadly, many other people, who are not famous, are attacked throughout the country way too often. I feel bad for McGillis, and am glad it wasn’t worse. I also feel bad for everyone else needlessly attacked, hurt and killed. These few tips we can learn from the McGillis incident can help you stay safe. So do so!

Dogs for Home Security bowlDogs for Home Security? Yes! Dogs definitely add another layer of protection for your home. It doesn’t have to be a trained guard dog either. Any four legged friend can be a security dog. They will be alerted to things you aren’t, and the barking will alert you and potentially neighbors. Most dogs are loud, even smaller dogs, and burglars don’t want to deal with them.

Here’s a little tip. Even if you don’t have a dog, you can make it appear like you do and that can keep burglars away. Remember, burglars want something quick and easy without getting caught. If they think there is a dog that could attack them, or even just bark and blow their cover, they will often pass on by to find someplace without a four legged security system.

You can display large dog bowls (food and water) near your front and back door, or even post “Beware of Dog” signs to give the appearance that your home is protected.

Having dogs for home security is one of the more simple measures you can take to help protect your home, especially if you are a pet lover. And if for some reason you just can’t or don’t want pets, making it appear as if you own a dog is also a very simple measure to add an extra layer of protection to your home.
