Reading time to me is investment time, I get that, I have read thousands of books in my lifetime, many on issues relating to self defence. I eat them whole. I too recommend hoping my students will read the texts I feel will benefit them, I too know my advice largely falls on interested ears but is rarely followed through. It is great when the feedback does come though and here I think I have found a neat little trick.

You see Alain has rounded up a really neat collection, its like a who’s who of the self defence world, and packaged it really well. There is nothing here but the texts Alain has selected, it is presented neatly and concisely. I think it is the bite size chunks students need to begin with to encourage them to go the whole hog after a while.

Used as a dip in dip out guide this could be a great way to start discussions in class around the training you do, it cannot help to introduce students to some of the real quality that is out there awaiting them. This little book could be just the catalyst that gets a student to join up all the dots themselves, or start to.

It is on my reading list, I have emailed all my students recommending it, Is it all you need to understand self defence? Of course not, it was never intended to be, its an intro, a guide and a smart one at that. I really enjoyed working my way through it and more than a few new lesson plans formed in my head whilst I read it.
