Safest Hotel Rooms

This page looks at the safest hotel rooms. I’ve mentioned some of this in lists on other pages, but I wanted to include this video showing that I practice what I preach. While staying at the Westin Los Angeles Airport hotel for the Author 101 University conference, I was in room 343. This room is on a desired floor, and the closest room to the elevators, which is also more desirable than those rooms at the end of the hall.

If you can avoid it, don’t accept a room on the ground floor. Rooms between the third and fifth or sixth floors are high enough to be more difficult for criminals to break into, but not so high that they are out of reach of most fire engine ladders. (I say 5th on the video, but some places sixth are still reachable by fire engine ladders.)

I strongly suggest you stay in places with interior doors. If you have to stay in a motel where doors open directly to the outside rather than a hallway, see if there are rooms overlooking an interior courtyard rather than the parking lot. This isn’t ideal, but sometimes you just have to do the best you can. Obviously the room you should avoid are motel rooms that are only one story with doors and windows that open to the parking lot. Yes, I understand these will be the cheapest rooms in town, but isn’t your safety worth spending more? While I want you to have a room close to the middle and near the elevators as I showed in the above video, and I want you to use those elevators, I also want you to find the fire escape route upon arriving at your room. Check where the nearest stairwells and emergency exits are. Don’t use the elevator if there is a fire! Determine all ways you can exit the building. It’s good to have a plan B if the hallway is blocked in one direction or the other.
