A lot is written about self-defense, and I also write, speak and make videos on the topic. I do this partially because this is what people expect and look for. But I don’t really like the term because I think it is lacking in what I am really trying to get across to people.
When people think of self-defense, they almost automatically think of physical responses to an attack. The word defense lends itself to this type of thinking, and that a physical response is require to protect yourself. This isn’t the case, and that is why I think self-protection is a better term. (Many other instructors agree with me on this, and you will find others using the term too.)
The areas of my Survive and Defend site, as well as my live presentations, are about Self-Protection. When we talk about self-protection, we are talking about much more than physical responses to an attack. Self-protection includes avoidance and escape made possible by your awareness of your environment and an understanding of how criminals operate and attack rituals. Self-protection covers the security measures you place in your home, the safety habits you practice, and everything else that helps protect you from harm. Since the number of people killed each year in automobile accidents is so high, a self-protection plan should include wearing a seat belt. The likelihood of a child drowning is greater than of being abducted by a stranger, and therefore a personal protection plan for your children should include teaching them how to swim, just like you teach them to look both ways before crossing the street. To me, personal protection is greater than just learning how to fight.
Yes, there are situations where you can’t avoid and escape a criminal or psychotic individual out to do you harm, and in such a case, you must attack back without hesitation and continue to attack until you can escape to safety. This might mean you have to attack back until the threat is neutralized before that opportunity to get to safety arises. This is why I teach people how to attack back and fight. But I do believe this is only a part of it.
I want you to develop your own personal self- protection and personal security plans to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. I also want your belongings safe, so I include resources to help you in this area too. Please use the Survive and Defend site to live safe and to prepare to defend yourself if you are ever forced to. I sincerely hope practicing the safety and security habits I share allow you to never have to use physical defense techniques. But I do want you to know how, and to have the right mental attitude if you are ever forced to face the unthinkable.
You must develop good personal security measures and street-smart awareness to help keep you safe. But you must also develop the unwavering conviction to do whatever it takes to survive if you are ever attacked, or ever find yourself in a survival situation. The resources here at this site will help you, and if you need more assistance, don’t hesitate to contact me. My aim is to help people stay safe, and that includes you.
