Identity theft and identity crime can cost victims psychologically and can affect employment, relationships, and many opportunities. The effects can be long-term. Amanda Horowitz of Fight Back! provided some information on the Identity Theft Resource Center (IRTC; link below) in a recent article for Costco Connection (December 2018, Vol 33, No 12). Here are some important ideas from that article.
No-cost victim assistance
The ITRC Victim Assistance Call Center, at 1-888-400-5530, provides toll-free, no-cost case remediation and assistance to consumers who hold U.S. identity credentials. If you need assistance with simple or complex identity crime cases, the Center can help you navigate the murky waters of your case. This includes help with identity crime cases, fraud or scams that involve communication with credit issuers, financial services, credit reporting agencies, and local and federal law enforcement.
Consumer education
The ITRC website provides information on scams and fraud. There are different categories including: child, criminal, elderly, financial, government, medical, and military. You an also sign up for a weekly newsletter for ongoing tips and information.
Live chat and app tools
There is an app to track your case and live chat where you can chat with an identity theft specialist. You can also get notifications and tips through the app.
Funding
The ITRC is a 501(c)(3) organization. It receives funding through federal grants from the Department of Justice as well as private corporate and foundational grants and donations.
Partners
The ITRC partners with corporations to ensure services are provided to all victims regardless of their financial situation.
