Protecting yourself from Zika is on many people’s mind these days as we hear things on the new. This is the general description from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) on Zika<\/a>:<\/p>\n

<\/a>Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.<\/p>\n

In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil. The outbreak in Brazil led to reports of Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.<\/p>\n

In response, CDC has issued travel notices<\/a> for people traveling to regions and certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.<\/p>\n

For most of us, it won’t be a concern. However, if you are traveling in an area where there are cases, it pays to take precautions and wear clothing that covers your skin and use mosquito repellent. This is especially important if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant in the future. If you fall into this category, I’d take extra precautions. And if you are a man who is married to a pregnant woman or planning to get pregnant, you should take precautions too. Watch this video for a little more information:<\/p>\n
